Today (August 19), the Old Port site will begin undergoing maintenance on a total of 49 trees that have died or become infected by emerald ash borers. This work will involve pruning, felling, and/or the removal of stumps, and will take place in the following areas:
• Clock Tower entrance: Three maple trees (felling and stump removal)
• MTL Zipline starting block: Three trees (stump removal)
• Saturn Park: Two poplars (pruning)
• Petite île (Bonsecours): Seven maple trees (felling and stump removal)
• Grande île (Bonsecours): Three maple trees (felling and stump removal)
• De la Commune Street: Five maple and ash trees (felling and stump removal)
• Île des Écluses: One ash tree, thirteen poplars, and ten other trees (felling)
• Grand Quay entrance: One maple tree (felling)
This maintenance work will be ongoing for the next ten (10) days.
Update on the ongoing tree maintenance work: as part of a sustainable polyculture strategy, a variety of different trees will be planted over the 2024 fall season.
Varieties include:
- Kentucky Coffeetree (gymnocladus dioicus)
- Elm trees (Ulmus Accolade®)
- Spruce tree (Serbian or European)
- Ginkgo biloba trees
- Sterling Silver linden trees
