Everyone knows Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site restored by Viollet-le-Duc, whose majestic silhouette attracts millions of visitors each year. But what do we really know about the city as it stood in 1304, upon the completion of its ramparts? Far more than a three-kilometer-long fortress guarding the kingdom’s borders, Carcassonne was a living city, filled with the hopes, struggles, and daily life of its inhabitants under the shadow of the Inquisition.

Co-produced by Excurio and the Centre des monuments nationaux, The Last Stronghold brings this golden age of the city back to life. Equipped with a VR headset, visitors are transported within seconds into Carcassonne as it was in the 14th century. Over the course of 45 minutes, they follow Simon, a young nobleman, and Agnès, a rebellious towns-woman, through a captivating storyline that blends fiction with historical authenticity.
Bustling markets, weapons training, nightly patrols along the ramparts, or the private lives of the city’s lords: each scene immerses the audience in a Middle Ages more vivid than ever before. Validated by leading experts in medieval history and architecture, this experience recreates Carcassonne with unprecedented richness and accuracy, as it stood before being transformed by Viollet-le-Duc.
